MISA will host a Golf Day to raise awareness for the work of Men’s Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation.
This will take place on 31 March 2023 at the Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg.
“MISA’s male members requested the Union to support a dedicated campaign to raise awareness about the serious issues affecting them. After some research, MISA identified Men’s Foundation who raises awareness for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health issues and gender-based violence amongst men,” says Martlé Keyter, MISA’s Chief Executive Officer: Operations.
Garron Gsell, founder of Men’s Foundation, is grateful for the Union’s request. Men’s Foundation had a huge setback last year after the global Movember Campaign (the largest global campaign) decided to withdraw from South Africa. Men’s Foundation was managing the campaign.
According to Gsell the lack of gender equality and unspoken gender discrimination under South African men has a far-reaching impact on society.
“Research has proven that Prostate Cancer will become the leading cancer, surpassing Breast Cancer, this year. About 1 in 8 men (12%) will develop Prostate Cancer.
“The Department of Correctional Services Annual report indicates a 400% higher rate of men in South African prisons, which reinforces the high unemployment since non-violent crime parolees lack economic opportunities for rehabilitation.
“At least one South African man dies every 80 minutes due to suicide, with an average of 17 men losing their lives per day.
“Over 60% of South African households are fatherless, resulting in boys lacking positive role-models and mentorship to overcome patriarchal stigmas ending in gender-based violence and sexual crimes such as rape,” says Gsell.
Keyter agrees with Gsell and says more can be done to raise awareness about all the critical issues affecting South African men.
MISA believes the Union is in the perfect position to use its influence after reaching 355 000 people on Facebook with our very successful 16-Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence Campaign in 2022.
