Dear MISA Member,

Are compliments wrong in the workplace?

It is the month of love… so may we pay a compliment to a colleague? When does light-hearted banter become a problem in the workplace?

I ask these questions in the light of the article in this edition of the MISA eDATA, where we explore what the employer’s liability is in cases of workplace sexual harassment.

As with everything in life, prevention is always better than cure:

• Do not talk about someone else’s body, no matter what the person’s gender identity. While it is acceptable to compliment a colleague’s shirt, dress or trousers, it is not acceptable to comment on how great it makes the person’s legs, abs and whatever else look.
• Ask yourself a basic question: would I say this to my mother, father, sister? Would this comment make me feel uncomfortable?
• And lastly, when in doubt, it is always better to keep your thoughts to yourself, even if you think you’re making a joke.
