#MISA, the Motor Industry Staff Association, is outraged and deeply saddened by the horrific incident where a woman tragically lost her life after a huge rock was thrown at her windscreen as she was driving under a bridge on the R24 in Bedfordview. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones. This senseless act of violence is a form of attempted murder, and it must be treated with the seriousness it deserves.
#MISA is gravely concerned about the growing reports of rocks and other objects being hurled at vehicles, from bridges. These attacks instil fear in motorists, traumatize families, and destabilize communities. They erode public confidence in road safety and place every driver and passenger at risk of serious injury or death.
We demand urgent, visible action from authorities, road agencies, and law enforcement. Patrols must be intensified on roads where rock throwing is common. Surveillance infrastructure, including cameras, drones, and lighting, must be installed, and warnings must be placed on bridges where attacks are frequent so motorists can respond appropriately. Public awareness campaigns are essential to ensure drivers are informed and prepared.
#MISA also urges motorists to adopt practical safety measures. Drivers should change lanes before passing under bridges to reduce the chance of being targeted, remain alert and adjust speed cautiously when approaching known hotspots, and avoid stopping under bridges or in poorly lit areas where attackers may lie in wait.
