ENOUGH! MISA horrified at Elizabeth Moselakgomo murder

MISA, the Motor Industry Staff Association, is horrified, devastated and furious to learn that the body of missing runner and mother Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo has been identified among the women found murdered in the Kempton Park area.
The 38-year-old went for a run on 10 September and never returned home. Her eight-year-old daughter raised the alarm when her mother failed to come back.
“This is absolutely devastating. How much more are South African women expected to endure before we collectively say ENOUGH?” says Martlé Keyter, MISA’s Chief Executive Officer: Operations.
Moselakgomo’s death comes amid an increasingly disturbing investigation into the discovery of five women’s bodies in the Kempton Park area over approximately two months. Police are investigating whether the murders are linked, amid fears that a serial killer could be targeting women.
“MISA is beyond alarmed. We are angry. We are furious that women continue to be raped, assaulted and murdered while they are simply trying to live their lives. A woman went for a run and never returned to her child. Women are now being warned not to walk or run alone. What are we saying to South African women? Stay inside? Don’t exercise? Don’t walk to work? Don’t travel after dark? Women should not have to surrender their freedom because criminals have taken control of our streets,” says Keyter.
Just over two weeks ago, at the end of Women’s Month, MISA declared that South Africa had lost the war against gender-based violence and femicide after Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia released crime statistics showing that 11 532 sexual offences, including 9 201 rapes, were recorded in only three months.
MISA warned then that Women’s Month could not be reduced to speeches, events and promises while thousands of women lived in fear of becoming the next victim.
“Today those words haunt us. Elizabeth Moselakgomo has become another name, another statistic and another family destroyed. An eight-year-old child will grow up without her mother. This cannot become normal in South Africa,” says Keyter.
MISA demands urgent, properly resourced and intelligence-driven policing in Kempton Park and surrounding areas and swift action to establish whether these murders are linked.
“We don't want another announcement. We don't want another promise. We want the person or people responsible found, arrested, prosecuted and removed from our streets. Women should not have to choose between freedom and survival. South Africa owes Elizabeth, her daughter and every murdered woman more than outrage after the fact. The State owes women safety,” says Keyter.
