From Tembisa to the World – Bongi Mthombeni’s Journey of Discipline and Dreams

MISA TV proudly presented the inspiring story of Bongi Mthombeni, a singer and performer whose journey proves that with discipline and hard work, dreams can come true. Raised in Tembisa by a single mother alongside four siblings, Bongi’s childhood was marked by financial struggle. Yet his mother’s unwavering support and his own determination kept his dream alive. From singing in the choir to teaching himself piano, he nurtured his talent despite the odds.
After matric, Bongi worked as a minibus taxi driver for three years, using the time to search for opportunities while staying focused on his goal of becoming a professional musician. His discipline paid off when he reached the Top 8 of Idols South Africa in 2010, a breakthrough that set him on a path to success.
As a child, Bongi would watch planes take off, dreaming of one day flying overseas on the Emirates A380. Years later, that dream became reality when Disney invited him to perform in their VIP lounges in the United State. His first international flight was aboard the very aircraft he had once admired. Since then, he has travelled the world, performing in the U.S. and Canada, and sharing stages with icons such as Seal, Diana Ross, and John Legend.
Through MISA, Bongi has inspired members with his music and shared his journey of resilience. The union’s support has opened doors, including a vehicle sponsorship courtesy of Chery Krugersdorp. The Dealership has awarded him a Chery Tiggo Cross and he proudly serves as ambassador for them. This partnership made possible through MISA’s commitment to uplifting artists.
Bongi extends heartfelt gratitude to MISA and its leadership, including CEO of Operations Martle Keyter, for creating opportunities that empower musicians and inspire communities.
