MISA members must familiarise themselves with Aarto

MISA, the Motor Industry Staff Association, warns its 79 000 members to familiarise themselves with the Administrative Adjustment of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO), to prevent potential disciplinary action or even dismissal if your driver’s license is suspended.

From today, 1 July 2026, AARTO’s Points Demerit System commenced in 60 municipalities nationwide including eThekwini, Buffalo City, Nelson Mandela Bay, Manguang, Ekurhuleni and Durban. It has been enforced in Tshwane and Johannesburg as a pilot project for more than a decade. Only Cape Town and municipalities in the Western Cape were deferred to a later date.

Martlé Keyter, MISA’s Chief Executive Officer: Operations, says this means that thousands of MISA members, who are required to have a valid driver’s license as part of their conditions of employment, are exposed to the devastating impact of the demerit system and license suspension for repeat offenders.

“MISA appeal to employers to identify employees who drive for work and to ensure an accountable person takes responsibility of its fleet to build a central register of all employees and vehicles, to track notices and deadlines. All employees must be trained on the policies of the employer and the possible consequences if they don’t comply.

“MISA members must respond to AARTO notices promptly, report any infringement, cooperate with the employer honestly and disclose infringements with fleet vehicles. Concealment and repeated non-compliance will put your job at risk,” says Keyter.

MISA urge members to accept that AARTO has now become a compliance obligation on all South Africans as part of an ongoing quest to improve road safety and to curb fatalities on our roads.
